Overview
Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic safari destinations and an excellent choice for travelers seeking a diverse wildlife experience within a single day. Nestled beneath the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park combines lush groundwater forests, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and the shimmering waters of Lake Manyara to create a remarkably varied ecosystem. Despite its relatively small size, the park offers an impressive concentration of wildlife and some of the most beautiful landscapes found anywhere on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit.
What to Expect
Your day begins with an early morning departure from Arusha and a scenic drive through local villages and the fertile highlands of northern Tanzania. Upon entering the park, you’ll explore a variety of habitats that support elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, baboons, and numerous antelope species. Lake Manyara is particularly famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior observed in only a few locations across Africa. The park is also a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with flamingos, pelicans, storks, kingfishers, and hundreds of other bird species frequently spotted around the lake and wetlands.
Best Time to Visit
Lake Manyara National Park can be visited throughout the year, with each season offering unique attractions. The dry season from June to October provides excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources and vegetation becomes less dense. The green season from November to May transforms the park into a lush paradise filled with migratory birds, vibrant landscapes, and excellent photographic opportunities. Birdwatchers often prefer the wetter months, while general wildlife viewing remains rewarding year-round.
