Overview

Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is one of Africa’s most unique and challenging trekking adventures. Rising dramatically above the floor of the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron, this active volcano is sacred to the Maasai people and offers spectacular panoramic views of Northern Tanzania, Lake Natron, the Gregory Rift Escarpment, and even Mount Kilimanjaro on exceptionally clear days.

Unlike Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, the challenge of Ol Doinyo Lengai lies in its steep terrain rather than altitude. The trek begins shortly after midnight and involves a demanding ascent up volcanic slopes under the stars before reaching the summit at sunrise. The best time to climb is during the dry seasons from June to October and January to March, when trail conditions are generally more favorable. This adventure is ideal for active travelers seeking a unique off-the-beaten-path experience combined with Maasai culture and the dramatic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley.
