Overview
Standing at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of Africa’s most rewarding trekking adventures. Located within Arusha National Park, the mountain offers an incredible combination of wildlife encounters, diverse landscapes, dramatic crater scenery, and breathtaking summit views. Unlike Kilimanjaro, the trek begins with an armed ranger escort as hikers share the lower slopes with giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and various antelope species.
The 4-day itinerary provides excellent acclimatization opportunities and is often recommended as preparation for Mount Kilimanjaro. The best climbing seasons are from June to October and December to March, when weather conditions are generally favorable. With its gradual ascent profile and lower altitude compared to Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru enjoys summit success rates of approximately 85% to 95%.
