ABOUT TARANGIRE
Land of Giants
Tarangire National Park is a landscape shaped by ancient baobab trees, rolling savannah and the life-giving Tarangire River. Quieter and more intimate than some of Tanzania’s larger parks, it offers rewarding wildlife encounters amid some of the Northern Circuit’s most distinctive scenery.
The park is especially famous for its elephants, which can be seen throughout the year and often gather in impressive numbers during the dry season. Lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and an exceptional variety of birdlife add to Tarangire’s rich wildlife experience.

Tarangire feels distinctly different from the open plains of the Serengeti. Giant baobabs rise above woodland and grassland, while the Tarangire River cuts through the park and provides an important source of water for wildlife.
Elephants are the stars here, but the park also supports lion, leopard, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and numerous antelope species. With hundreds of recorded bird species, Tarangire is also one of the Northern Circuit’s rewarding destinations for bird enthusiasts.

The Heart of the Park
Flowing through the park’s varied landscapes, the Tarangire River plays a central role in the ecosystem and gives the national park its name.
During the dry months, when seasonal water sources disappear across the surrounding region, the river becomes increasingly important. Elephants, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and other animals gather around its remaining waters, often attracting predators as well.
This concentration of wildlife can make the dry season particularly rewarding, but Tarangire remains beautiful throughout the year as its landscapes transform with the seasons.

Tarangire River
The park’s wildlife lifeline.
The river winds through the heart of Tarangire and becomes an important gathering point for wildlife, particularly during the dry season. Game drives along the river can reveal elephants, antelope, buffalo and predators moving through the surrounding landscape.
Baobab Country
Ancient giants of the savannah.
Massive baobab trees define much of Tarangire’s character. Their enormous trunks and sculptural branches create some of the park’s most recognizable scenery and spectacular settings for wildlife photography.
Silale Swamp
A green refuge in the wilderness.
This expansive wetland provides a striking contrast to Tarangire’s drier landscapes. The surrounding area attracts elephants, herbivores, predators and abundant birdlife.
Southern Tarangire
Quiet, remote and wonderfully wild.
Farther south, Tarangire becomes increasingly remote. Visitor numbers generally decrease and the landscape feels wilder, making this area rewarding for travellers with more time to explore.
Tarangire Through the Seasons
Tarangire changes dramatically with the rains, from lush green landscapes to the wildlife concentrations of the dry season.
JAN – MAR
Green & Scenic
Warm conditions and green landscapes create a beautiful period for exploring Tarangire. Wildlife remains present throughout the park, while birdlife is particularly rewarding.
APR – MAY
Long Rains
Seasonal rainfall transforms the park into a lush landscape. Visitor numbers are generally lower and the wilderness feels especially quiet, although some roads can become more challenging after heavy rain.
JUN – OCT
Dry Season
As the landscape becomes drier, wildlife increasingly gathers around the Tarangire River and other permanent water sources. This is a particularly rewarding period for elephant sightings and general game viewing.
NOV – DEC
Short Rains
Short rains refresh the landscape and bring new vegetation. Wildlife begins to disperse more widely as water becomes available beyond the river, while the park takes on a greener appearance.
