Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Tour

Where Water, Coffee & Culture Meet.

Materuni offers a completely different rhythm from the safari plains.

Set in the lush foothills of Kilimanjaro, this day experience combines a countryside walk to Materuni Waterfall with a hands-on introduction to locally grown coffee and the traditions surrounding it.

Along the way, you’ll experience village landscapes, learn about coffee production with local hosts and enjoy a traditional meal before making your way back.

It’s an easy addition before or after a safari or Kilimanjaro climb, and a chance to spend a day experiencing Tanzania beyond its national parks.

THE CULTURE

THE LANDSCAPE

Beneath Kilimanjaro.

FROM ARUSHA TO THE FOOTHILLS

One Day.
Plenty to Remember.

01 / THE ROAD TO MATERUNI

Leave the City Behind.

Travel toward the Kilimanjaro region as busy streets gradually give way to farms, villages and the greener landscapes surrounding the mountain.

02 / WALK TO THE WATERFALL

Follow the Water.

Set out on foot through the countryside toward Materuni Waterfall. The trail takes you through lush vegetation and rural landscapes before reaching the waterfall itself.

Take your time at the falls, enjoy the scenery and, when local conditions allow, cool off near the water.

03 / THE COFFEE STORY

From Bean to Cup.

Return to the village for a hands-on introduction to one of Tanzania’s most important crops.

Learn about the traditional process of preparing coffee, from the bean through roasting and grinding, before finally tasting the result.

This part should feel participatory rather than like watching a demonstration from the sidelines.

04 / CHAGGA LUNCH

Sit Down. Eat Local.

Finish the experience around the table with a locally prepared meal and another opportunity to learn about life and culture around the Kilimanjaro foothills.

Sometimes the conversations around lunch become just as memorable as the places visited.

05 / RETURN

Back to Arusha.

After the day’s experiences, begin the journey back to Arusha with muddy shoes, perhaps a little coffee in your bag, and considerably more knowledge about where it came from.

GOOD TO KNOW

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Comfortable walking shoes are important. The waterfall trail can become wet or slippery, particularly after rain.

CAN I SWIM?
Swimming conditions can vary with weather and water levels, so this should always depend on local guidance on the day.

DO I NEED TO BE VERY FIT?
No specialist fitness is required, but visitors should be comfortable walking on natural and sometimes uneven terrain.

CAN I COMBINE IT WITH ANOTHER EXPERIENCE?
Yes. Materuni works particularly well around a Kilimanjaro itinerary or as an additional day before or after a northern Tanzania safari.

Follow the Water. Stay for the Coffee.

Some days are about seeing somewhere new.

Others let you taste it, walk through it and meet the people who call it home.
