The Great Migration follows no calendar written by people. Rainfall, water and fresh grass determine where the herds move, making every year slightly different.
At different times, the journey can take you to the southern plains for the calving season, through the central and western Serengeti as the herds move north, or into the remote northern reaches around the Mara River.
The secret to a memorable migration safari is not simply choosing the Serengeti. It is choosing the right part of the Serengeti for your travel dates.

Nature Decides the Route
The migration is a continuous movement through the greater Serengeti ecosystem rather than an event that happens in one place.
When seasonal rains bring fresh grass to the southern plains, the herds gather to feed and give birth. As conditions change, they begin moving north through the Serengeti, sometimes forming vast columns stretching across the landscape.
Later in the year, many herds reach the northern Serengeti and the Mara River. Eventually, the changing rains draw them south again, beginning another cycle across the plains.
There are no guarantees in the wild. That unpredictability is part of what makes witnessing the migration so extraordinary.

Southern Serengeti & Ndutu
Where new life begins.
During the early months of the year, the short-grass plains become an important gathering area for wildebeest. The calving period brings thousands of newborn animals and increased predator activity.
Central Serengeti
Through the heart of the plains.
As the herds begin their journey north, parts of the migration move through the central Serengeti. The region also supports excellent resident wildlife throughout the year.
Western Corridor
Rivers, woodland and moving herds.
As migration patterns shift northward, the western reaches of the ecosystem can become an important part of the journey, with herds moving through grasslands and river systems.
Northern Serengeti
Wild country. Dramatic encounters.
Later in the dry season, large numbers of wildebeest can reach northern Serengeti and the Mara River region, creating one of the migration’s most famous chapters.

The Journey Begins
As grazing conditions change, the herds begin moving away from the southern plains and through different parts of the Serengeti.
JUN – JUL
Moving North
The migration continues northward, with large groups potentially encountered across western and central sections of the ecosystem depending on seasonal conditions.
AUG – OCT
The River Country
The northern Serengeti becomes an important migration area, with herds moving around the Mara River and between surrounding grazing grounds.
NOV – DEC
The Return South
As seasonal rains refresh the plains, the migration gradually begins its journey back toward the southern Serengeti, preparing for another cycle.
