Serengeti Migration & Calving Season Safari
There are moments in the natural world that fundamentally shift one’s understanding of life on this planet. The calving season of the Great Migration — when tens of thousands of wildebeest calves enter the world each day across the southern Serengeti — is one of them. This itinerary is designed exclusively around this extraordinary event, available between January and March.
Between January and March each year, the vast wildebeest herds of the Great Migration gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area to give birth. At peak calving, it is estimated that over 8,000 calves are born every single day. These plains become one of the most dramatic wildlife theaters on Earth — an extraordinary convergence of life and predation, vulnerability and survival.
Lion prides fan out across the plains, following the herds with practiced patience. Cheetah mothers hunt frantically to feed their own cubs. Hyena clans shadow the newborns relentlessly. And yet, the wildebeest herds sustain their losses and press forward — a cycle of life that has continued across these plains for hundreds of thousands of years. To witness it is to understand Africa at its most primal.
DAY 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your Arusha lodge. Welcome briefing with your JUA EXPLORER guide, covering the specific zones of the Serengeti you will visit and what conditions are expected during your safari. Dinner and overnight in Arusha.

DAY 2: Ngorongoro Highlands — Journey into the Ecosystem
After breakfast, your vehicle heads southwest toward Ngorongoro and the rolling highlands that mark the transition between the Rift Valley escarpment and the Serengeti plains. En route, you pass through the extraordinary landscape of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — rich in Maasai culture and wildlife. Depending on your route and timings, a wildlife encounter on the road is a genuine possibility. Overnight near the crater rim or in the Ngorongoro highlands.
DAYS 3 & 4: Ndutu and Southern Serengeti — At the Heart of the Calving
Two full days on the Ndutu plains and the short-grass savannah of the southern Serengeti — this is the emotional and biological heart of this safari. The landscape here feels different from elsewhere in the Serengeti: lower, more open, the horizon vast and the sky enormous. Acacia woodlands give way to exposed grassland where visibility stretches for kilometres in every direction.
Your days begin before sunrise, positioned to catch the first light as predators make their final hunts of the night. By mid-morning, the plains shimmer with movement: wildebeest as far as the eye can see, zebras, Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, and above it all, vultures circling on thermals that mark the locations of kills. Your guide will navigate to areas of concentrated activity, ensuring you are present for the most dramatic interactions.
Afternoons bring a different quality of light and behaviour. Cheetahs become active in the late afternoon warmth. Lions stir from their midday torpor. The calves born this morning — already steadier on their feet — run alongside their mothers. It is deeply moving, deeply human, deeply African. Extended sunrise and sunset game drives are standard practice during these two days.

DAY 5: Tarangire National Park — A Gentle Conclusion
The final day transitions to Tarangire National Park, a fitting counterpoint to the drama of the calving plains. Among ancient baobabs and along the Tarangire River, elephants move in their unhurried way, giraffes browse the umbrella acacias, and the air fills with birdsong. A gentle final game drive before your return to Arusha and departure.
