The Ultimate Big Five Expedition
The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros — represent the pinnacle of the African wildlife encounter. Named by the great hunters of the colonial era as the five most dangerous animals to pursue on foot, they are today the most sought-after wildlife sightings on the continent. This six-day expedition is built from the ground up to maximize your chances of encountering all five in conditions that allow for extended, unhurried observation.
The Ultimate Big Five Expedition places you in the three parks that offer the highest density and diversity of flagship wildlife in Northern Tanzania: Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, and Tarangire National Park. The itinerary is deliberately intensive — structured to position you in prime wildlife zones at optimal hours — while remaining flexible enough for your guide to respond to the unexpected opportunities that define truly memorable safari.
This is a safari for those who are serious about wildlife. Every game drive is purposeful. Every decision — where to position the vehicle, how long to remain at a sighting, which direction to take at a fork in the track — is made by a guide with deep knowledge of animal behavior and genuine expertise in reading the signs of the bush. You are in expert hands.
DAY 1: Arrival in Arusha — Safari Gateway
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your lodge in Arusha, where your JUA EXPLORER guide will meet you and conduct your full expedition briefing. The preparation for a focused Big Five safari is important: your guide will explain the behavior of each of the five species, the best strategies for locating them, and what to expect from each park on your itinerary. Dinner and overnight in Arusha.

DAY 2: Ngorongoro Crater — Big Five Stronghold
The Ngorongoro Crater is arguably the finest single location in Africa for encountering the Big Five in a single day. Its enclosed, self-contained ecosystem means that all species are present year-round and can be found by a skilled guide with relative reliability — though wildlife, of course, never operates on schedule, and each encounter is a genuine event.
Lion prides in Ngorongoro are amongst the most studied in the world, and their territories within the crater are well understood — your guide will know where to look and when. The black rhinoceroses’ population, numbering around 20 individuals within the crater, represents one of the most significant conservation successes in Tanzania. Elephant bulls, some carrying tusks of remarkable length, are encountered regularly. Cape buffalo graze across the central grassland in great dark herds. And leopard, the most elusive of the five, can sometimes be found in the fever tree forest of the crater's northern edge. A full, extraordinary day.
DAYS 3 & 4: Serengeti — Predator and Migration Territory
Two full days of intensive safari in the Serengeti National Park — the finest predator-watching environment in Africa. The Serengeti's resident lion population is one of the largest and most studied in the world, with multiple prides occupying defined territories across the park. Your guide's knowledge of these territories transforms each drive from a search into a story — following individual lions known by sight, understanding the dynamics of the pride, and positioning for the most meaningful encounters.
Leopard in the Serengeti inhabit the riverine woodlands of the Seronera Valley and similar habitats elsewhere in the park. They are most reliably spotted in the early morning when they descend from trees where they have cached their kills overnight, or in the late afternoon as they begin to stir and hunt. Your guide will know the most productive territories and invest time accordingly.
Depending on the season, the Serengeti's great wildebeest migration may be visible — vast herds moving across the plains, accompanied by thousands of zebras and gazelles, and the predators that follow them: lions, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs on occasion. Between July and September, the dramatic Mara River crossings represent one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet. Extended game drives from before sunrise to after dark. Overnight in a tented camp positioned for maximum wildlife access.

DAY 5: Tarangire — The Elephant Kingdom
Tarangire completes the Big Five narrative with its extraordinary elephant population — one of the largest concentrations of African elephants on the continent. The herds here are large, family-structured, and remarkably accessible along the Tarangire River corridor. To spend time with these animals — watching matriarchs lead their families to water, calves navigating the riverbank, bulls jousting at the water's edge — is one of Tanzania's most affecting wildlife experiences.
Lions are resident in Tarangire, and leopards are present in the riverine woodland. Buffalo are plentiful across the park's open areas. It is a fitting final chapter to an expedition that has pursued the Big Five with commitment and expertise across three extraordinary parks. Overnight in Tarangire or return to Arusha, as schedule permits.
DAY 6: Return to Arusha — Departure
Final transfer to Arusha, with optional stops en route. Your JUA EXPLORER guide will see you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey — or to your extended accommodation if you have chosen to add a Zanzibar beach escape or additional safari days.
